by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Ministry has requested the private sector, well wishers and other institutions to make their financial and other dry rations, donations to the Special Disaster Management Unit set up at the Ministry to assist the people displaced in the tsunami tidal wave that devastated the coastal areas. In order to obtain details from this Disaster Management Unit,the Ministry has opened a hotline which will operate round the clock. Those who wish to make their donations can contact this hotline on telephone numbers 0112869696 and 0112869697 or the Secretary, Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Ministry, Govijana Mandiriya, 80/5, Rajamalwatte Avenue, Battaramulla. In addition 45,000 Ministry employees have agreed to contribute their day's pay to provide assistance to those displaced. Through this, Ministry will donate nearly Rs. 7.5 million towards the stricken victims. Meanwhile in order to provide immediate medical treatment to the victims, Jinasena Ltd has opened a temporary hospital at the Jinasena tyre factory at Veedigama, Matara. Therefore the company appealed for doctors who will volunteer to serve at this hospital. Milco Pvt Ltd which belongs to the Ministry has made arrangements to distribute 5000 milk powder packets in 200 gram packs, and water bottles among displaced families. Steps are being taken by Milco to distribute another 75000, 200 ml drinking water packets to the stricken families. Milco employees have also donated Rs. 100,000 collected for their Christmas party to the Disaster Management Unit set up by the Ministry, he said. |
