Indian relief arrives

The Government of India is providing relief and humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the tragedies caused by the tidal waves on Sunday, December 26. PM Manmohan Singh has expressed profound sympathy at the loss of life and the destruction caused by the tidal waves that hit Sri Lanka on Sunday, states an Indian High Commission press release.

One Indian aircraft with 600 kgs. of medical supplies and a team of one doctor and two medical assistants arrived in Colombo at 1940 hours yesterday. The aircraft will return on December 27, 2004, with additional supplies. Four Indian Navy ships will be arriving in Sri Lanka to carry forward relief works. Of these four, INS Sandhyak, has already arrived in Trincomalee at 1000 hours on December 27, 2004, with medical and general relief items diving teams and inflatable boats. Another Indian Navy ship INS Sharda has arrived in Galle at 1200 hours today with medical teams and other relief supplies.

Six MI-17 helicopters are arriving at Colombo International Airport with medical teams and medical and general relief items. One large transport aircraft IL-76 is also arriving today at Colombo International Airport with medical teams and medical and general relief provisions.

The INS Sutlej another Indian naval ship will be arriving in Galle between 1900 and 2000 hours today, while the INS Sukanya will be arriving in Trincomalee with medical and general relief supplies, diving teams and inflatable boats. One naval helicopter will be present on board all the ships for search and rescue operations.

The High Commission of India has established a Control Room at the High Commission premises to answer all queries relating to Indian nationals in Sri Lanka affected by the recent tragedy. This Control Room is being manned on a 24-hour basis. The telephone and fax numbers of the Control Room are:-

The High Commission of India has dispatched three consular teams to Galle, Yala and Trincomalee to provide all assistance to any stranded Indian tourists and Indian nationals in different parts of Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner Mrs. Nirupama Rao, is cutting short her visit to India and is returning on December 28, 2004, to coordinate relief and assistance efforts here.
