Prime Minister rescues UNP's Bandula Gunawardena

Among the victims of Sunday's devastation were former Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena holidaying at Arugam Bay with his family. Stranded on the roof top of Arugam Bay Rest House, the entire family was rescued by an Air Force helicopter after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse en route to the South to witness the devastation, called for help after seeing them.

Former Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte was also rescued stranded at Yala wildlife park where a large number of people including foreign tourists died after the tidal waves devastated the coastal areas. Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana said nearly 10 of his family members including his sister from Galle were missing since Sunday.

Senior lecturer at the Sri Jayawardhanapura University Ven. Meegoda Pannaloka Nayaka Thera has been reported missing since Sunday. It has been reported that the vehicle he was travelling washed away in the tidal waves near Galle.
