P. G. Martin to set up plant to manufacture travel bags by Shirajiv Sirimane The P. G. Martin Group of Companies will set up an international travel bag assembling and manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka soon for export to Pakistan and other countries. According to Chairman, Managing Director, P. G. Lalith Nimalsiri they are hoping to manufacture products at their factory complex in Homagama. Samsonite bags and other products are now being imported from Belgium and India. He said that the finished products now carry a 65 percent duty and this was one reason they decided to manufacture the bags in Sri Lanka. He said that the raw material would be imported from India, China and Belgium for their operation. "This is because we want to maintain the quality of our products," he said. The company established over half a century ago also opened their sixth Samsonite Travel World sales outlet in Colombo 5 last week. He said that they are also hoping to open one of their outlets at the Colombo Duty Free shopping complex. He said that Samsonite products has a world-wide reputation mainly in European countries as well as in Asia, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka operates exclusive Samsonite Travel World sales outlets. Urban Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Sports Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga were also present at the opening. |
