by Rajmi Manatunga The construction of five overhead bridges around the Colombo city will commence in January next year in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the Capital. Highways Ministry Secretary S. Amarasekere told the Daily News that Ministry officials are finalising initial preparations for the project to be carried out by the Road Development Authority (RDA). "The locations for the proposed flyovers will be Orugodawatte, Nugegoda, Pannipitiya, Rajagiriya and Gampaha where traffic congestion is at its worst. We hope to call tenders for construction work of these projects," he said. According to the RDA, the proposed flyover at the Nugegoda junction on Highlevel road which is a four lane bridge is estimated to cost around Rs. 800 million. The Orugodawatta flyover will cost around Rs. 550 million. The flyovers at Nugegoda, Orugodawatta and near Parliament road in Rajagiriya would be large-scale, consolidated projects while those in Gampaha and Pannipitiya (two lane bridge) would be minor projects. |
