SLMM chief meets LTTE today

by Ranil Wijayapala

Chief of the Nordic truce monitors, Trond Furuhovde will meet LTTE Political Wing Leader S.P. Thamilselvan today in Kilinochchi to discuss number of issues including the dispute over the Nagar Kovil, Forward Defence Line in Jaffna peninsula, Monitoring Mission Spokesman Oskar Solnes told the Daily News yesterday. He said Major General (Rtd) Trond Furuhovde flew to Jaffna yesterday afternoon to have discussions with the Security Forces Chiefs, LTTE area leaders and the truce monitors in Jaffna. Furuhovde is scheduled to arrive at Kilinochchi this morning to meet LTTE Political Wing Chief S.P. Thamilselvan to discuss number of issues including Nagar Kovil dispute, Trincomalee situation and the matters relating to transport of LTTE cadres from one area to another.

According to sources the prime aim of Furuhovde's visit to Jaffna was to visit the disputed no mans area in Nagar Kovil between the Forward Defence Lines of the Security Forces and the LTTE.

The SLMM has given priority for the Nagar Kovil dispute and is having discussion with both Security Forces and the LTTE to have a considerable gap between the two FDLs as the SLMM thinks they are 'too close' to each other.

The Government turned down a proposal by the SLMM, which suggested that both parties should pull back the FDLs to a mutual agreed distance to keep considerable gap between the two FDLs.

"Both parties are claiming that the other party should pull back their FDL as they were the responsible of moving the FDL", SLMM Spokesman Solnes added.

According to Solnes, Furuhovde had met Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Sunil Tennekoon on his arrival in Jaffna peninsula last afternoon.

Major General Sunil Tennekoon said he had discussion with the SLMM Chief on the situation in the Jaffna peninsula and Nagar Kovil issue was one of the many issues they discussed.
