By Nadira Gunatilleke The Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry has made arrangements to celebrate the International Disabled Persons Day which falls on December 3 in a grand scale in collaboration with the Education Ministry, Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Seetha Rajapaksa said. She said that the ministry has organised several programs to celebrate the occasion. The ministry will issue a first day cover to mark the day. A special insurance scheme will be introduced for the disabled persons through Social Security Board. A concert with the performances of disabled persons and schoolchildren will also be staged to mark the day. Sports events, workshops and counselling programs for the disabled persons have also been organised to mark the day. According to recent ministry statistics, the percentage of disabled persons in Sri Lanka is between 6.5 and 8 percent from the total population. It is believed that about 120,000 disabled persons live in the country at the moment. The ministry will soon link `elders' committees' set up countrywide with the HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) to offer a better service for the elderly community in the country with the assistance of young volunteers attached to HASL. |
