Handicrafts net over Rs. 5.4 million at Shilpa 2004 by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Shilpa 2004, the largest ever handicrafts exhibition held at the BMICH recently earned over Rs.5.4 million from handicrafts. Handlooms also recorded a huge income and attracted a large crowd. Over 600,000 people have visited the exhibition during the three days, Deputy Director Handicraft Council Dayasiri Lambias said. This time we were able to bring the exhibition to the national level in its 20- year history. The participation of craftsmen was very high at the exhibition. An allocation of Rs 26 million on awards and prizes this year was significant to encourage craftsmen with 972 exhibit items under 32 categories, he said. It was a great achievement that the craftsmen sold all their goods during the first two days and it was evident that there is a good local market for our handicrafts although people think it was not so, Dayasiri said. The exhibition was held to provide market facilities for local craftsmen at good prices and to encourage and honour industrialists expert skills by presenting Presidential awards. There will be two Presidents Awards for super craft and innovative craft while 27 national awards will be presented for other items. The awards ceremony will be held at the BMICH on December 15 under the patronage of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. |
