Rs. 130 m to develop fisheries harbours' cold stores The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will invest Rs. 130 million to develop all fisheries harbours' cold stores in the country. Under this program, the Ministry has decided to reconstruct and modernise the cold store of the Modera Fisheries Harbour by investing Rs. 30 million. At present, the capacity to produce ice in this cold store is very low and it is not sufficient to meet the fishermen's demand. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Chandrasena Wijesinghe said that the cold store will be reconstructed to its full potential and it is also planned to set up a proper storage system to preserve fish. "This initiative would vastly improve the fisheries industry in the Modera area. The reconstruction and modernisation of this cold store will reduce 20 percent of electricity wastage in the operating process. After the modernisation, the cold store will be able to provide storage facilities for foreign fishing vessels too," the minister said. He said that the Ministry has planned to implement various programs to develop the fisheries industry. "This project will be launched under the National Fisheries Program which focuses on developing all fisheries harbours' cold stores islandwide. Under this project which is expected to be completed in 2007 all fishery harbours in the country are expected to be developed," the Minister said. IR |
