by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Work at the Colombo National Hospital returned to normal yesterday with nurses deciding to terminate the strike which crippled services at the Hospital. The strike was called off on Saturday afternoon. The nurses launched their strike Friday noon demanding authorities to swiftly provide the Ministerial Committee report. The strike was called off following a discussion between the representatives of the Public Services United Nurses' Union and Health Ministry officials on Saturday The committee was appointed to look into a dispute between a surgeon and a nurse at the hospital. The discussion was chaired by Ministry Additional Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilake and attended by Director General of Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage and Hospital's Deputy Director (Accident Service) Dr. Anil Jasinghe, sources said. The authorities had agreed to provide the committee report by Wednesday and to create a peaceful atmosphere within the hospital. The investigating committee comprised Ministry officials Dr.P.G. Mahipala (Director of Tertiary Health Care) and Somaratne Pathirana (Director - Special Investigations). The committee is to hand over their report to the Director General on Tuesday. The incident involving a consultant surgeon and a nurse took place on Monday night. |
