Retired public officers form association to serve country

Retired senior public officers have joined to form an association to put their resources and experiences together for the well-being of the country.

They met on June 19 this year and the collective has been named "Society of Retired Senior Public Officers of Sri Lanka", a Non Governmental Organisation.

They invite those in retirement after service to the country in various capacities to join them if they so wish to share their expertise for the future of the country which needs the support of all to move forward in development.

Taking a cue from the speech made by United Nations Secretary General Koffi Annan on October 01, 2003, where he is reported to have said that "Older persons represent a powerful, but untapped resource for society" and" Little attention had been paid to how we can best use the skills of older persons in development", the members have decided to put their heads together to work for the country even in their old age as a duty to the Motherland.

Secretary of the Society Dr. A. A. D. Perera, in a statement to the media said that " a few individuals, who had retired after long service in the public sector starting at grass root level and gaining experience in various fields of activity, had discussed the UN Secretary General's remarks and had decided that the time was ripe for them to form into a Society with a view to offer their services to the country's development activities.

The members who joined at the inception include Prof. P. P. G. L. Siriwardene, Prof. Lakshman Jayatilake, Dr. Joe Fernando, Dr. D. Nesiah, Dr. (Mrs) Siromani Abhayarathne, Messrs. H. Premawardhana, E. L. Wijemanne, K. S. Kulatunga, U. Yasapala Nanayakkara, E. M. Easwaran, M. C. M. Iqbal and Dr. A. A. D. Perera.

Mr. Perera explained that the Constitution of the Society has as its objectives and functions among others: i) the establishment and maintenance of a pool of retired senior public officers with skills and expertise; ii) to offer those skills and expertise to national and international agencies; iii) to provide a forum to discuss public issues and other matters of common interest; iv) to provide advice on matters referred for expert opinion;v) to foster a spirit of camaraderie and esprit de corps among members.

He said that they wish to hear from those patriotic retired senior public officers willing to join hands with them and further make their contribution for the development of the country to speak or write to the Society at No. 35, D. S. Fonseka Road, Colombo 5 or dial 2597017 during weekdays between 1 pm to 6 pm for further information.
