Uniflow traffic system in Colombo from today

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Colombo city traffic police will implement the uniflow traffic system aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the Capital from today following a successful trial run.

Colombo Traffic Police Senior Superintendent Y. G. R. M. Lafir told the Daily News that yesterday's trial of the uniflow system was 'very successful' and they hoped to continue it."

There was a very smooth flow of traffic to and from the Colombo city as a result of the trial which commenced in the morning. However, we appeal to the public to bear any initial difficulties caused by the change since it will take about two or three days for them to get used to it," he said.

The new system introduces a one way traffic flow northwards along the Galle road from Wellawatte up to Kollupitiya junction and from Liberty Plaza roundabout along Duplication road for traffic moving Southwards up to Dharmapala road, Wellawatte.

The system will give each road six lanes one-way which is twice the present number of lanes. It is expected to save 15-20 minutes of travelling time of the working population and also prevent wear and tear of vehicles.

SSP Lafir said police will monitor the flow of traffic throughout the day. According to Traffic police statistics, some 100,000-120,000 vehicles enter the Colombo city daily along Galle road and the Duplication road resulting in severe traffic congestion.
