All parties including UNP should render all support to NACPR - Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera

by Asela Kuruluwansa

All parties including the United National Party should avoid wasting time and render all necessary cooperation to the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation (NACPR) initiated by the President to establish lasting peace in the country, states the Most. Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Maha Nayaka Thera, the Maha Nayaka of the Malwatte Chapter.

The Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera made this observation, when delegates of 12 Buddhist Associations called on him at the Malwatte Maha Viharaya, yesterday morning to discuss the numerous problems faced by Buddhists.

The Sri Lanka Buddhist Women's Congress, the Dharma Vijaya Foundation the Triumph of Colombo, All Ceylon Buddhist Congress, Public Service Buddhist Association, the Lanka Buddhist Conservation Council, Buddhist Power Circle, Dhammacharini Organisation, Triumph of Sri Lanka Kandy Buddhist Physicians Association, Gemi Sarana and the Tawalama Development Foundation were the 12 organizations whose representatives called on the Most Venerable Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera yesterday.

Answering the delegation's query as to the Maha Nayaka Thera's views pertaining to the pending discussions between the Mahanayake Thera and the Tamil National Alliance, the Most Venerable Thera reserved his comments till he concludes talks with the TNA members. He also remarked that the UNP at this stage should replace criticism with cooperation with other parties to resolve the problem.

The Maha Nayaka Thera emphasised that as a Buddhist he cannot turn down anyone who calls on him, but he cannot agree to Interim Administration as it stands under the current proposals and that on principle the Maha Sangha cannot agree to any suggestions that will do harm to the nation and the country.

The Buddhist delegates pointed out to the Maha Nayaka Thera the dangers ahead, if Interim Administration as it stands today is to be granted.

Colombo National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Rani Fernando, Prof. Malkanthi Chandrasekera, Specialist Dr. Anula Wijesundera, Dr. Maitri Rajapakse, Thusitha Senaratne, Olcott Gunasekera, Jaliya Nammuni, Gamini Perera, Chitra Wijesekera, Indrani Wijesinghe, Kanthi Perera, Ananda Kahawatta and Anil Amarasekera were among the Buddhist delegates who met the Maha Nayaka Thera.
