Far East and South Asian rowers for FEARA Regatta

by Richard Dwight

The forerunner, to the SAF Games to be held next year will be the Far East Amateur Rowing Association (FEARA) regatta that takes place from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October 2004 on a 1,000 metre water stretch of the Beira Lake alongside the Colombo Rowing Club (CRC).

With competition coming from the Madras Boat Club (India), the Karachi Boat Club (Pakistan), the Rowing and Canoeing Federation of Myanmar, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club from Hong Kong and the Colombo Rowing Club (Sri Lanka) - this regatta will therefore not only serve as a trial and test for the participants from the Far East and South Asia but also enable them to have a feel of things to come in the 2005 SAF games.

These observations were made by the Chairman of the FEARA regatta committee, Deva Henry and President CRC, Chrisantha Perera, at a media briefing held on Wednesday at the CRC.

This apart, it was gathered that the FEARA with its headquarters at Hong Kong, was formed in 1954 and celebrates as it does, its 'Golden Jubilee' this year, while the CRC here in Sri Lanka, marks its 140th anniversary and so this 30th FEARA regatta in the series, is being held in Colombo this year to commemorate both veritable landmarks in the history of FEARA and the CRC.

An event such as this, involving foreign teams could be regarded as a major undertaking and the organisers were most emphatic to express their thanks to their co-sponsors viz. HSBC, Sampath Bank, Sri Lanka Insurance, Commercial Bank, Associated Motorways and for accommodation provided for the team by Trans Asia Hotel and GOH.

Countries taking part could field one or more teams, with three identical events for both men and women viz. coxed fours, coxless pairs, single sculls and veterans sculls.

Losers in the heats could go onto compete for the 'Interport' trophies. In addition this year the double sculls event would also be held, which however will not be taken into consideration for overall championship honours. The side coming out on top as comprehensive winners will be determined by the aggregate of points received.

Awards on offer

Men's winners
Fours - Interport Challenge Cup
Pairs - Blair Challenge Shield
Sculls - Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Cup
Ladies' winners
Fours - Millennium Cup
Pairs - Saigon Rose Bowl
Sculls - Colombo Rowing Club Cup

The overall champions - C. V. Bhatt Trophy. The preliminaries and heats will be held from Thursday September 30 and the finals on Saturday October 2 at which the chief guest will be He the Ambassador for China.
