President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga received Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Peterson at the United Nations headquarters on Thursday. They reviewed developments in the Sri Lankan peace process since Peterson's visit to Sri Lanka in May, states a press release from the Presidential Media Division. President Kumaratunga stressed the need for the LTTE to reiterate their commitment to the Oslo principles agreed upon in December 2002 and to stop the killings of those who held different political views from the LTTE. The President expressed confidence in carrying her government with her on a power sharing agreement with the LTTE. She explained the consultative purposes of the National Advisory Councils for Peace and Reconciliation to be inaugurated on October 4 and to which she had invited the Opposition Leader, other political parties in Parliament, religious groups and civil society representatives. The Norwegian Minister agreed to convey the President's concerns to the LTTE to resume negotiations without further delay. Associated with the President were Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Ambassador Bernard Goonetillake, Secretary to the President, W. J. S. Karunaratne and Peace Secretariat Secretary General, Jayantha Dhanapala. |
