12th Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championship:

Lanka lose again, meet India for rankings today

By bernard Perera

Sri Lanka Junior Women spikers failed to perform the previous day's attacking game against Thailand yesterday at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in the 12th Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championship. when they went down to Thailand three sets to nil.

The first set saw Thais in full control of the proceedings and went on to complete the set at 25-8. Lankans never were in the game in this set making many errors. Thais played as a complete unit and halted the Lankan's from scoring.

The second set was much better for Lankans as went onto pile up 2 points against 25. Here the locals made many blunders when Thai attack was furious. When two were defending the others were not well positioned to raise the smashes and the placings that were coming from the opponents. This gave the Thais the chance to score at will.

In the meantime whenever the Lankans got the serve they failed to capitalise and this allowed their opponents to add to their score. The set ended as 25-12 in favour of visitors.

The third set too went into the hands of Thais when the local attackers failed to grab the opportunities that come their way. Whenever the chance was there to score our spikers either smashed the out of court or did notplace them properly to add points for them. This way in third set too Lankans were badly placed. But fared a little bit better to score 17 points to Thais 25 points.

In another game that was played yesterday Australia made a clean sweep beating India in straight sets - India failed to win a single match in this tournament in group B are placed at the bottom.

Today India will meet sri lanka at 9.00 a.m. which to decide the 7th and 8th placings. Meanwhile Thailand take on Australia at 11.00 a.m. for the 5th and 6th placings.

The defending champions China take on strong Koreans which is the first semi-final at 3.00 p.m. The winners of this clash will meet the winners of Japan and Taipei match which is the second semi-final. This match is scheduled to be staged at 5.00 p.m.
