by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy The Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Maha Vihara Chapter and Ven. Professor Warakawe Dhammaloka Thera, Secretary, Asgiriya Maha Vihara Chapter commended President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's appeal to the United Nations to call for due respect for religious symbols and practices with particular reference to the exploitation of Buddhist symbols for commercial purposes. They contended that the President's appeal to the World body should be commended. The President had said Sri Lanka was disturbed to witness religious symbols, and even Images of the Buddha being defamed or abused for commercial purposes, and such abuses whatever the religion those symbols represented, should be condemned and prohibited. The Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera of Malwatte added that when reports about a film titled Hollywood Buddha being produced in United States were published in local papers along with a man sitting on the head of a Buddha statue he and the Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera of Asgiriya Chapter made a joint request from the President to protest against that film and its publicity poster. They had also requested the President to take it up with the United Nations. The Mahanayake Theras were happy that in response to their request, the President had taken it with the World Body in a broader way. |
