DUA commemorates SLMC founder late M. H. M. Ashraff

The Muslim community was brought under one umbrella through the untiring efforts and perseverance of late leader M. H. M. Ashraff who founded the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, said Hafiz Nazeer Ahamed, Secretary General of the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) at a meeting commemorating the fourth death anniversary of M. H. M. Ashraff, PC.

The commemorative meeting was organised by the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) held at its Head Office at Ward Place, Colombo on September 16, states a DUA press release. Ahamed in his keynote address recalled that the SLMC was formed with much sacrifices and dedication. During this time many leading personalities from various political parties joined the party to make it viable and strong. But the deplorable situation that prevails now is due to the main stalwarts who stood with the leader are either thrown out or sacked bringing the party with a handful of new faces.

Speaking of late Ashraff's achievements and his modest ways of life towards achieving the aspirations of the Muslim community, Hafiz Naseer Ahamed noted that Mr. Ashraff was not only a great personality but also a statesman and an exemplary thinker. Mr. Ashraff during his political career paved the way for a stable and strong community which was until then at the mercy of major political parties.

Hafiz Nazeer Ahamed said that the late leader's dream was to enhance the Muslim community's educational and economical conditions and to make it a success; he called upon all Muslim leaders to devote their time and energy to achieve this objective.

He said it was our duty to shed all political and other differences for the sake of the community in order to bring about economic and social freedom. The Secretary General added that the late leader having made the SLMC politically powerful was instrumental to make it a third force to form governments. He said he had an encouraging vision towards finding a durable solution to the country's ethnic crisis. All ethnic groups in the country accepted his contributions towards this concept.

DUA Chairman, M. I. Uthumalebbe and members of the Executive Committee were present. Kathmul Quran (Recital of Holy Quran) in the name of late M. H. M. Ashraff was also held.
