Medical insurance scheme for public sector employees advocated

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The Government should introduce a medical insurance policy for employees in the public sector as done in developed countries.

According to Joint Managing Director Philip Hospital Group of Companies, Mrs. Indrani Fernando, this would automatically ease the burden on government hospitals.

"There are many private institutions and insurance companies who are already offering medical packages. However, the government has not taken the initiative in this area," she said.

She suggested that this program could start from the government sector where a percentage of the salary would be deducted for a health insurance scheme. "When a scheme of this nature is in place a policyholder can go direct to a private hospital thus reducing the demand and burden on government hospitals," she said.

She said that the private hospital industry is growing and an insurance policy of this nature would double the industry growth. "This would also generate more employment opportunities and reduce the burden on government hospitals," she said.

The hospital group has seen the growth and have already invested Rs. 190 million to construct a modern private hospital in Kalutara to accommodate 100 beds.

Construction work has already commenced and it is scheduled to be opened by end January next year.

She said that similarly the government should also forward a policy to look after retired persons. "One way would be to pay in advance for a home for the aged where retired people can go when they reach old age. This would be something similar to a dole provided in developed countries," she said.
