Colombo Dockyard Limited (CDL) making a breakthrough into the offshore industry has won a contract from ABAN Loyd Chiles Offshore Ltd in India to do extensive repairs to its first offshore Drill Rig. The Rig is already docked at the Colombo yard and a technical team from the Dockyard is carrying out preliminary engineering to commence repairs.

CDL in the recent past has won extensive contracts from the Indian Navy and other shipping companies in India. The floating dock owned by the Indian Navy too is undergoing repairs at the yard.

Managing Director/CEO Mangala Yapa told a press conference that the main scope of repairs to be carried out is to rectify the damages sustained to the mat (the platform which is submerged) "We have submerged three coffers to carry out repairs.

We have also mustered internal resources and local specialists to tackle this project successfully.", Yapa said.

"We have launched an aggressive marketing drive to win more Indian and other regional ship building and repair contracts and Sri Lanka could be a potential hub for ship building and repairs. We have showed our expertise in our skills and this is a very prospective business to earn more foreign exchange to the country", he said.

This rig was towed to Colombo by Tug Mahanuwara of Sri Lanka and diving assistance and preliminary underwater are handled by Master Divers. CDL operates a joint venture with Onomichi Dockyard in Japan.

CDL enjoys a reputation as one of South East Asia's leading ship repairers and builders. The ability to conduct business from within the port of Colombo gives CDL a strategic advantage and has proved to be a boon to ship owners.
