Manmohan asks Pakistan to firmly control terrorism

London, Monday (PTI)

Ahead of his maiden meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in New York on September 24, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tonight asserted that "preconditions" for making progress in the bilateral dialogue process was for Islamabad to firmly control terrorism.

He said both the countries should work for "mutually acceptable" solutions to complicated issues confronting them.

"I will convey to him (Musharraf) that our country is sincere in carrying forward this dialogue. Both sides recognize that we are dealing with complicated issues. It will take time. So we should be patient," Singh told reporters on board the Prime Minister's special aircraft "Tanjore" before arriving in London.

Meanwhile India Prime Minister and American President George W Bush will discuss a wide range of bilateral and international issues, including the need for the world community to unitedly fight terrorism, when they hold their first summit meeting here tomorrow.

At their breakfast meeting a few hours ahead of the United Nations General Assembly session, the leaders of the world's two major democracies would consider ways of deepening the "Strategic Partnership" which has taken a major step forward with the US easing restrictions on the supply of equipment and technology for India's space and nuclear programmes.

Closely watched would be Singh's first meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Friday where confidence building measures, including steps to increase people to people contacts, would be discussed.

Prior to leaving New Delhi, Singh said he expects the meeting with Musaharraf to be "wholesome" and a "further step" in the ongoing bilateral dialogue between the two countries. All issues, "very much including Kashmir," will be on the table when the two leaders meet.
