Missing handball team in Germany not arrested - Doering

by Chris Dhambarage

The Chief Executive Officer of the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme Dietmar Doering denied media reports that the 23-member Sri Lanka handball team have been arrested following their mysterious disappearance in Germany.

He said that there is no truth in these statements and that no arrest have been made yet by the German Police. The 23-member Sri Lankan handball team vanished last week half way through their planned tour which was originally schedule from September 9 to 28.

The team headed by Athula Wijenayake in a letter dated September 15 had informed the authorities that they will be leaving for France for better prospects and will not be returning back to their country. The team is legally allowed to stay until October 7.

This tour was organised by the Sri Lanka Handball Federation in collaboration with the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme. Dietmar Doering said that three years ago a German handball team visited Sri Lanka and played an exhibition match in Minuwangoda which the visitors won 36-3.

The Sri Lanka Handball Federation was founded thereafter and this tour was set to provide the much needed exposure for the inexperienced players. However, Dietmar Doering vowed that he would bring back the 23-member team back to Sri Lanka at the earliest possible and said that he will make every effort to avoid such unfortunate incidents in the future.

Doering also said that he has freezed all other foreign tours and activities associated with the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme until a solution is made for this crisis. He said that the CID is working together with the Anti Human Traffic Unit and the Interpol may also come into the scene if required.
