President's World Peace Day message

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in her world peace day message for 2004 states that she believes we are at the threshold of transforming our little country into a peaceful nation where all communities can live in peace and harmony.

The President in her message further states the world is joining together to create a global ceasefire today - humanity's peace in our homes between our communities and among nations.

The President's message states: "The developed World began to focus on terror, fear and war only after the attack on New York's World Trade Centre in September three years ago. Those of us in the developing world have been at the receiving end of terror and political violence for too long. We in Sri Lanka have experienced a bitter war for the past twenty years or more.

I believe in the concept of 'Anichcha' as enunciated in Buddhist philosophy, which tells us 'nothing is permanent'. We in Sri Lanka now have a war weary people on both sides of the divide. This crisis cannot go on for too long. I now have reason to be more confident than ever before, I believe we are at the threshold of transforming our little country into a peaceful nation where all communities can live in peace and harmony.

Despite the increase in violence and sedition, a global movement to create a better world has been growing, bringing us hope for more peaceful, just and sustainable future. In the past four decades and more the 'Sarvodaya Movement' has done much to promote peace in our country.

This year the United Nations proposed a tangible goal that will help unite our global community and shift our consciousness. The world is joining together to create a Global Ceasefire today - humanity's first day of peace, peace in our homes, our communities and among nations.

I am happy that the 'Sarvodaya Movement' has organised this event today to mark World Peace Day and I trust this day will contribute to create awareness among all Sri Lankans the need for peace. May this be the day on which we Sri Lankans resolve to discard all our ideological differences and unite for a lasting dignified peace."
