Media promoting non-violence should be complimented - Ela Gandhi

Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahathma Gandhi in a message to mark the international day for peace which falls on September 21 says: "The architects of this day were people from the film industry who produced a film on peace. However popular media plays a destructive role in terms of promoting non-violence and peace in the name of targeting audiences through sensationalism, the media is actually promoting violence by projecting violence in all its gory details.

"While exposing atrocities is important one needs to consider the effect of exposure of young people to such details. We really need to redefine the role of media, radio, television, film and newspapers, in the context of peace in our society and media that plays a role in promoting non-violence actively must be complimented."

She adds: "This is a call to those who continue to perpetrate violence. Cries of millions of people from all over the world will inspire a change of heart in those who continue on the path of violence."

"History has shown that violence ends in misery for the perpetrators and the victims. We all know this and yet we continue on this destructive and irresponsible path to achieve a higher cause which all parties that are warring maintain. We need to remember that there can be no higher cause than non-violence." "But non-violence is not merely the absence of violence. It is an active non-violent resistance. Non-violence recognises the evil that exists in our world and tries to eliminate the evil without causing harm to other people."

History gives full of examples of people who have transformed their world through non-violent means. There are quiet workers who continue to work for peace and non-violence for justice and human rights and for an egalitarian society. These individuals are seldom given the same prominence," she said. "Let us focus on these individuals and make them our role models for the future," the message concludes.
