by Sandasen Marasinghe

The Police Inspector R. Dharmaratne stated yesterday (20) that a group of Policemen including himself discussed about the Udatalawinna incident before the investigation was conducted at the Kandy Police Kennel Division on December 17, 2001.

He made this observation before the Trial-at-Bar hearing the Udatalawinna massacre case when he was examined by the Deputy Solicitor General Palitha Fernando.

The Trial-at-Bar comprises High Court Judges Eric Basnayake (President), Deepali Wijesundara and Sunil Rajapakse. K. A. Jayantha Kumara Dissanayake, retired Army sergeant cross examined by the Defence Counsel Anil Silva said that an army soldier named Ananda worked in the armoury with him and he was among those in the platoon that left for Kandy from the Boyagane Camp on November 30, 2001.

Even after his return he worked with Dissanayake at the armoury.

He further said the platoon returned the 29 weapons to the armoury on December 6, 2001 after they were cleaned as usual by the soldiers themselves.

Presiding Judge Eric Basnayake:-"Is each weapon cleaned before it is returned ?"

Witness:-"Yes, the weapons that are issued for the duties."

When re-examined by the Deputy Solicitor General , Dissanayake stated that a separate officer in the camp was responsible for the weapons which were issued from the armoury used in the internal duty of the camp. The Police Inspector R. Dharmaratne said that he was a Sub Inspector in December 2001 and transferred to the Kandy Police on December 16. He participated in a discussion at the Police Kennel Division led by a SP.

The group of Police included Sergeant Abeyratne, Police Constable Ratnayake, Woman Police Constable (WPC) Kumari and WPC Champika.

Although he had already knew about the incident he officially learnt about it at that discussion. Nobody with regard to this incident had been taken into custody by then.
