Milk powder at lower prices through Janasahana program

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Government through the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry has implemented a special programme named " Janasahana Programme" to provide Highland milk powder to consumers at concessionary rates.

According to this programme, MILCO Private Ltd which comes under the purview of Agriculture Ministry will provide a 400g Highland milk powder packet to consumers at Rs.115 and 1 Kg milk powder packet at Rs.260, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

Compared with the other milk powder prices in the local market, MILCO has provided Highland milk powder to the consumers Rs.35 (400g packet) and Rs.70 (1Kg packet) lower than the market prices, he said.

The intention of the Janasahana programme is to provide immediate relief to the consumers who have faced hardships due to increasing milk powder prices in the local market and to popularise the consumption of locally made milk powder among consumers, he said.

He said this milk powder distribution programme was commenced by MILCO on Thursday opposite the Fort Railway Station with the participation of Agriculture and Livestock Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

He said the MILCO has already deployed 20 mobile vehicles to implement this programme in all major cities throughout the country. The MILCO has decided to conduct this programme upto October 16.

These vehicles will tour all major cities in Colombo district and also other major cities of Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Kegalle and Ampara districts, he said.

Meanwhile, the MILCO has guaranteed that they can supply Highland milk powder at this price to cater to the consumer demand without any shortage.

"MILCO is the largest milk products manufacturer in Sri Lanka which makes products under the brand name of Highland. The MILCO functions as a fully-Government owned company under the purview of the Ministry."

In order to further extend this programme for the public welfare, the MILCO has decided to provide Highland milk powder to welfare outlets of the State owned institutions at concessionary rates.

Institutions willing to purchase Highland milk powder can make a request from the MILCO Chairman, he added.
