No interference with IGP, orders Ranaviraja

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Inspector General of Police should be allowed to work independently without any interference, Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order Secretary and Central Environmental Authority Chairman Tilak Ranaviraja said yesterday.

"The IGP is the authority of the Police Force and he should work according to his plans," Ranaviraja said. "I will discuss this with the National Police Commission," said Ranaviraja addressing the re-opening ceremony of the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force yesterday.

This Unit was originally opened in January 1, 1996 on the advice of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

"In October 2002, it was closed by the then Government. During the period it functioned, the Police had collected over Rs.143 million to the Government coffers."

Ranaviraja and IGP Indra de Silva were received on arrival by DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne, who is in charge of the Central Anti Vice Striking Force, and several other Senior DIGs.

The Ministry Secretary who was the chief guest at the ceremony, said Government servants should work with greater dedication and responsibility to overcome existing problems.

A country cannot be developed if government servants work without any responsibility. The entire police force should get together and assist the Central Anti Striking Force to combat crimes, the Secretary said. When he took over the Ministry, the President had told him to focus special attention to police personnel without any discrimination and assist them to develop their living conditions. "We are always prepared to assist the Police personnel to overcome their difficulties. Do your job properly and you will benefit," the Secretary said.

The Police Force is doing a national service, they have a prime duty to build the society. There has been a severe social degeneration and Police has a responsibility in helping to rebuild social values among the public, the Ministry Secretary added.
