Private sector needs creative and innovative people today - Mahendra Amarasuriya

by Anjana Samarasinghe

The private sector today is looking for creative and innovative people to empower their human resource" said chairman of the Commercial Bank Mahendra Amarasuriya at the launch of EDEX 2005 Higher Education and Career Guidance fair last week in Colombo.

"We need people who can analyse problems and who can achieve the correct solutions " he said. "Although Sri Lanka has the highest literacy rate we have a paradox due to unemployment", he said.

"The traditional preconception about career is changing. There are many job opportunities available in the market. EDEX will help job seekers to find various job opportunities available today", he said.

Secretary to the Prime Minister Lalith Weerathunga said "each year only 15,000 students qualify to enter local universities and 20,000 will be able to attend foreign universities and other institutes."

"Those who couldn't get into universities need reliable information to choose the right career path for them", he said. "Many job seekers are not successful when they present themselves at interviews", he said. It is very important to convey the correct information for these job seekers, he said.

"In the first half of 2004 nearly 170,000 foreign job opportunities were offered to Sri Lanka. Only 70,000 of these positions were matched by Sri Lankans "said Chairman of EDEX 2005 Mithila Mendis.

"The main reason is that Sri Lankans acquire skills but do not obtain a competency certificate", he said. "The service industry must develop to world class standards for Sri Lanka to survive in the new open market" he said.

The EDEX 2005 Higher Education and Career Guidance fair organised by the Royal College union in association with Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pvt) Ltd (LECS) will be held from January 13 to 15, 2005 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition and Convention Hall of the BMICH.

There will be 150 stalls by local and foreign universities, institutes, job banks and scholarship funds. Big companies have been invited to showcase their requirements to prospective job seekers. There will be seminars to show those who look forward to a career how to face an interview.
