Quality vital to withstand quota phase out

by Sudarshana Perera

Sri Lankan garment factories should continue to maintain quality as well as quantity to secure a better market for our garments globally said the Compliance and Safety Manager of the Sri Lankan Office of the Fielding Group Ahammed Azad.

Azad said that if Sri Lankan garment factories could continue to meet all international compliance and safety standards, we could face the termination of Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) better while finding a niche market for our garments and textiles in other countries.

The "Made in Sri Lanka" brand should be better marketed and quality is a prime factor in this regard. Buyers in countries such as USA, UK and Europe are very conscious about quality and we should adopt all international standards while updating ourselves with the latest technology", he said. Azad who recently completed both parts of the Marks and Spencer Audit Exam said that Sri Lankans should expose themselves to international norms and practices to meet any challenges that emerge with the termination of the MFA.

He said that Fielding Group factories are very conscious about the welfare of human resources and their factories also comply with Mark and Spencer standards.

Mark and Spencer is a worldwide company based in USA which gives orders to other countries.

He said that Sri Lankan factories have got to compete with other countries and quality and maintaining industrial standards are a sine qua non to better withstand the quota phase out. Azad who has 18 years of working experience in the garment sector said that investment on any compliance requirements will have a return and added that it would help any possible security by global industrial giants.

Azad is conducting audit in the related garment sector and is qualified in ITS-Sri Lanka (Inter Tec Testing Laboratories).
