Maha Bodhi Society to hold birth anniversary of the Anagarika

Buddhist temples and organisations across the country affiliated to the Maha Bodhi Society of India have made arrangements to commemorate the 140th birth anniversary of Anagarika Dharmapala on 17th September with religious performances and public meetings.

At Buddha Gaya, Saranath, Kushinara, Kolkata and Lumbini in Nepal, Lucknow, New Delhi and Bubaneshwar there will be special programmes throughout the day to pay homage to the founder of the Maha Bodhi Society of India.

The Maha Bodhi Society of Sri Lanka at its centres in Chennai and Sanchi will perform a special pooja to bestow merits on late Anagarika Dharmapala.

At Buddha Gaya, from where Anagarika Dharmapala started to revive Buddhism after a gap of 800 years, there will be a public meeting to commemorate the 140th birth anniversary of the founder with Most Ven. Rastrapal Maha Thera, President of the Maha Bodhi Society of India in the chair, Prof. Geshe N. Samten, Director, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Saranath will be the chief guest and Prof. Vachaspati Upadhyay, Vice-Chancellor, Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit University will be the chief speaker.

At Saranath, where the Anagarika passed away, besides religious performances throughout the day there will be a public meeting which will be presided over by S. Sundaram, General Secretary, Theosophical Society of India, Varanasi. Divisional Commissioner, Varanasi C.N. Dubey and ex-director, Bharat Kala Bhavan in the Benares Hindu University Prof. Anand Krishna will be the main speakers.

In Kolkata, at the Shri Dharmarajika Chetiya Vihara there will be a day long programme with Buddha Puja and Sangha Dana. In the morning celebrations will start after garlanding the Dharmapala statue at the College Square.

In the evening at the Commemorative meeting former President of the Asiatic Society, Dr. Manabendu Benerjee, President, Bangiya Shiksha Parisad and Dr. Gour Mohan Mukherjee, Vice President, Bengal Theosophical Society will be the chief speakers.
