Literature to liberate country from colonial adherence - Minister

by Nadira Gunatilleke

'As a developing country we face numerous economic hardships. We need a substantial strategy to overcome those hardships. We launched Dahasak Maha Wev (Thousand Massive Tanks) program to give life to the nation but we need people with matching ideology to carry out the development process.

Therefore we launched the National Arts Festival under the theme of 'Giving eyes to the nation', said Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath.

Addressing a press briefing held at his office Herath said that the country needs people with suitable mentality to walk forward. There should be a matching ideology. This is the first step of bringing a Sri Lankan literature with a strong identity to the global level.

We have to create a strong Sri Lankan literature that is liberated from colonial adherence. This is the main intention of organising the National Arts Festival 2004.

The National Arts Festival will commence on September 20 at the Viharamahadevi Cultural Triangle under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse. The festival will take place till September 26. The National Literary Awards Presentation will take place at the BMICH, Colombo 7 on October 5 at 3.00 pm under the patronage of the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

The Minister said that 35 prominent artistes who devoted their lives towards the country's literary field including dance, music, drama and painting will receive awards at the festival.

Books will be gifted to children who are born between September 20 and 26.

This is the first step of encouraging parents to give books as birthday gifts to their children instead of giving toys such as pistols and other weapons.

All children born between September 20 and 26 are encouraged to take part in this festival.

The festival will include separate stalls for indigenous people's literature, labour literature and University sub culture literature.
