by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has pledged to extend their continuous assistance to upgrade Sri Lanka's health sector. A group of JICA representatives had made this pledge to Healthcare, Nutrition, Uva Wellassa Development Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva at a recent meeting held at the Health Ministry. Accordingly, JICA will focus on improving infrastructure facilities in remote areas. "They will also pay attention to construction, training in management areas and strengthening rural health care," a Ministry spokesman said. The discussion was attended by JICA's Chief Advisor on Health Planning Prof. Handa Yujiro and Prof. Yasuo Uchida of the International Relation Studies section of the Kobe University. The spokesman said the JICA has come forward to extend their assistance to prepare a national health plan and a memorandum of understanding in this regard is expected to be signed shortly. He said JICA also provides funding for the construction of the modern hospital complex in Jaffna for which an agreement had already been signed. Minister de Silva requested the JICA representatives to extend their assistance to prepare plans to build several paying wards at every leading Government hospital. Ministry Secretary Ranjith Maligaspe and Additional Director Nihal Jayathilake were also present. |
