Some bad eggs bring disrepute to Police Department: Magistrate

by Sarath Malalasekera

Police personnel attached to the Vice Squad going into night clubs on the pretext of searching for unauthorised activities and requesting for women after consuming liquor is a disgrace to the Police Force and to the genuine and honest Police Personnel in the Department, said Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne remanding three police personnel including an OIC of a Vice Squad, Colombo.

Wearing police uniform and committing crimes is very serious. These Police personnel only bring disrepute to the Department, the Judge observed releasing seven Police personnel on bail including a Reserve Sub Inspector of the Maligawatte Police Station.

At the outset, 10 Police personnel were produced before an identification parade by Colombo Fort Acting Magistrate Malkanthie Wikramanayake. Three prosecution witnesses identified three police personnel at the parade. They were remanded till September 30.

The other seven Police personnel who were not identified at the parade were released on cash bail in Rs. 2,500 each and ordered to appear before Court on September 30.

President's Counsel Rienzie Arasacularatne, Senior Counsel for the three suspects moving for bail, said they were not involved in the robbery of any cash or weapons from the Thai national.

Sub Inspector S. K. Kithsiri appearing for the prosecution submitted to Court that nine police personnel were arrested in connection with the robbery of US dollars 1,600 and other valuables from a Thai national while he was returning to the vessel anchored at Colombo Harbour from a casino in Colombo.

The other suspect, an RSI who was wanted in connection with the same case surrendered before the Magistrate on Wednesday.

The Thai national had left the country after making the complaint to police, SI Kithsiri said.

Rienzie Arasacularatne PC, Harin Gomes, Thajitha Koralage and Wasantha Batagoda appeared for the first three suspects.

Anton Senanayake with Kingsley Hettiarachchi appeared for the RSI.

Jayantha Dias Nanayakkara, Deemani Beddewela, Prasad Weerasekera and Amani Abeygunwardena appeared for the other suspects.
