Increased allowances for teachers in difficult areas

A Memorandum was submitted to Cabinet by the Minister of Education on 'Systematic distribution of teachers to overcome the teacher shortage in difficult and very difficult schools and introduction of a financial inducement scheme for teachers serving in such schools.

Approval was granted to pay a special monthly allowance of Rs. 2,500 from 2005 in addition to the salary of teachers serving in very difficult areas and Rs. 1,500 from 2005 in addition to the salary of teachers serving in difficult schools. The total sum allocated is Rs. 566 million.

This is the first time that such a substantial allowance will be allocated to teachers in difficult areas, the Education Ministry said.
