Highest tea prices in August

Tea prices experienced a boom time in August, 2004, breaking the all-time average prices per kilogram of tea, thus this month has been the best ever month for prices inthe history of tea industry in the island.

According to brokers - Forbes and Walkers Limited, the total sale average for August 2004 and the averages for the high, medium and low grown sectors have achieved all-time record levels.

The total sale average of Rs. 188.53 shows a growth of Rs. 37.40 when compared with the Rs. 151.13 average during the same period last year.

The most significant growth has been from the high grown sector which records an average of Rs. 181.24 which is a substantial Rs. 54.85 higher than the Rs. 126.39 average per kilo during the same period last year.

An impressive low grown average per kilo of Rs. 196.27 also shows a growth of Rs. 25.83 when compared with the Rs. 170.44 average during August 2003.

The medium grown average per kilo of Rs. 161.26 shows a growth of Rs. 34.33 when compared with the Rs. 126 average during the same period.

The total sale average of US dollars 1.83 when compared in dollar terms also recorded a growth of 26 dollar cents per kilo when compared with the US dollars 1.57 per kilo average during the same period last year.

The total sale average for January to August 2004 at Rs. 168.29 reflects a growth of Rs. 23.40 when compared with the Rs. 144.89 average during the same period last year.

The largest growth has been from the High Grown sector which recorded an average of Rs. 164.36 for the period which is Rs. 32.37 per kilo higher when compared with the Rs. 131.99 average during the same period in 2003.

The Medium Grown average of Rs. 146.32 shows a growth of Rs. 24.29 per kilo. The Low Grown average of Rs. 175.54 shows a growth of Rs. 17.05 per kilo when compared with the Rs. 158.49 during the same period last year.
