Singer-Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens on a grand scale

by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent

The sixth version of the Singer SriLankan International Rugby Sevens conducted by Kandy Sports Club will be shifted to the invincible fortress of the Upcountry club for the first time when it gets under way at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium from Friday September 10th to Sunday 12th with play commencing at 9.30 a.m. and is expected to go upto 6.30 p.m.

This week the teams have started trooping into the hill capital to get themselves acclimatised to the weather conditions.

An unexpected during this part of the year in this hill city has broken by spells of showers which has made matters easy for the organisers as otherwise they may have had to water the ground with bowser loads of water.

This tournament which started in 1998 as a part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Kandy Sports Club has seen tremendous progress and last year International Rugby Board sent its Asian representative James Scott to have a look at the organising and the facilities available to the participating teams and spectators and officials and he was so impressed with all that he said that he will be sending positive signals to the World body at a press briefing held during the last year's sevens tournament.

Now the International Rugby Board (IRB) has upgraded this tournament as a qualifying event for the Asian Region for the Rugby World Cup.

This is what both the organisers and the sponsors were aiming at after the hard work and the amount of money they had been spending. Malik Samarawickrema said that this has been goal which we had been striving hard to get and now that we have made a start and we must progress along with.

Knowing Malik Samarawickrema's organising abilities along with the lieutenant Iswan Omar, there is no doubt they will look for higher goals.

Singer Sri Lanka (Pvt.) Limited and the Sri Lankan Airlines are the principal sponsors while as in the past Connaissance de Zeylan, the reputed hotel Management services having their hotel atop the Heerassagala hill - the Le Kandyan Resorts will be the co-sponsors.
