30th National Sports Festival Kusumawathi sets new 800m meet record Chris Dhambarage reporting from Badulla S. V. A. Kusumawathi of Central Province set up a new meet record in the 800meters on the third day of the 30th National Sports Festival track and field events continued at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla yesterday. Kusumawathi returned a timing of one minute 02.15 seconds erasing the previous best of one minute 02.37 seconds held by Mangalika de Silva of North Western Province in 1998. The second record of the day came in the men's 4X100m relay final where they clocked 40.78 seconds to better their own record of 40.99 seconds also in 1998. In the men's 400 metres hurdles final the favourite Harijan Ratnayake of Uva Province was pushed to the third place with Yasasiri Ajith of North Western Province taking the gold medal. However the experienced Mangala Priyadarshani took the gold medal in the women's 800 metres final clocking 2 minutes 10.64 seconds. Table Tennis Western Province and Central Province clinched the men's and women's table tennis team championships respectively at the final worked off at S. Thomas' College indoor stadium, Bandarawela yesterday. In the men's final Western Province beat Central Province 3-1 and in the women's final Central Province beat Southern Province 3 nil. In the men's consolation final Southern Province defeated North Western Province 3 nil and in the women's consolation final North Western Province beat Western Province 3 nil. The champion Western Province men's table tennis team included Indika Prasad, Nuwan Sampath, Tharindu Samaraweera, Dinesh Deshappriya and Malinda Laksitha. The champion Central Province women's table tennis team included Deepika Rodrigo, Kalpana Herath, Upeka Kotinkaduwa, Shanika Silva and Nadini Abeygunawardena. Netball In the netball tournament semifinals Western Province outplayed Central Province 78-41 and North Western Province defeated Southern Province 49-33. Soccer In the men's soccer tournament semifinals North Western Province edged out Sabaragamuwa Province by a solitary goal after a scoreless first half. In the second semifinal Western Province beat North Eastern Province by the same margin. In the women's soccer tournament semifinals Uva Province defeated North Eastern Province 3-1 and North Western Province beat Western Province 4 nil. In the women's volleyball tournament semifinals Western Province defeated Southern Province 25-6, 25-9, 25-12. Cricket In the men's 15 overs per side cricket tournament Southern Province beat Central Provinve by eight wickets. Central Province were all out for 68 runs in 15 overs and Southern Province reached 73 for 2 in just eight overs. In a women's cricket tournament match Western Province beat North Central Province by 25 runs. Western Province batting first scored 65 for 3 from their five overs and North Central in reply were all out for 40 runs in 4.5 overs. Results 400m hurdles Women (final): (1) S. V. A.
