Two Indian trawlers catch fire

Two trawlers said to be belonging to Rameswaran, India caught fire between Talaimannar and Pesalai sea yesterday, Thalaimannar Police said.

Police said there was no news as to what had happened to the people in the trawlers.

Navy said while their officers were patrolling the sea, they had see smoke from a distance and they had gone to the scene, they said the officers had noticed both trawlers on fire and had tried to save one as the other was completely destroyed. While trying to pull the other trawler it had also sunk.

Sources added the Navy had communicated immediately this to the Indian High Commission in Colombo. Investigations are being carried out by the Thalaimannar Police and the Navy.
