Cabinet decisions

New building for Dambulla DS

A Cabinet decision has been taken to build a new building for Dambulla Divisional Secretariat according to a Cabinet paper presented by Public Administration and Local Government Minister Janaka Tennakoon.

After President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga opened an economic centre at Dambulla in 1998, the Dambulla Divisional Secretariat division became the fastest developing divisional secretariat division in the Matale district. The Cabinet decision is also aimed at developing tourism in the area.

Rs. 600m flyover

Another Cabinet decision has taken to build a flyover at a cost of Rs. 600 million by the end of 2007 at the point where Kohuwala-Nugegoda road and the High Level Road meet, according to a Cabinet paper presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Highways Mahinda Rajapakse.

The project is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Nugegoda. It was the PA Government which commenced Road development projects in 1994 such as Baseline road, High Level road, and Narahenpita road which runs passing the Information Department and several other roads.

Education, administration building

Cabinet approval has also given to build a new education and administration building for the Sri Lanka Pali and Buddhist University at Pitipana, Hewaheta according to a Cabinet paper presented by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as the Minister of Education.

The university was established in Gurulugomi Vidyalaya at Homagama in 1995 and the PA Government built buildings for hostels in the same year.

There is no further space to develop the university. Under the new project a library, a computer centre, a lecture hall and an auditorium and a faculty administration building consisting maintenance, stores supply section will be provided at Rs. 365 million.

The university will shortly make arrangements to offer a degree on Buddhism in English medium for foreign and other students wishing to study Buddhism in English.

Hindu cultural centres

According to a Cabinet paper presented by Agricultural Marketing Development Hindu Affairs Minister and Minister Assisting Education and Vocational Training Douglas Devananda, Cabinet approval has been given to build 12 fully-fledged Hindu Cultural Centres at Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Pottuvil and Colombo at Rs. 60 million.

At the moment only Batticaloa has a Hindu Cultural Centre. Each centre consists an auditorium, a library, reading room, an office and space for religious activities.

Several religious buildings in the North and East were destroyed during the war.

National Arts festival

The Cabinet has approved a Cabinet paper presented by Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath in connection with the National Arts Festival 2004. The festival will be held from September 22 to 28 at the BMICH, under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's patronage.

The festival received State patronage for the first time in 1958. The festival consists several seminars, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, items related to dancing, music, drama, films, literature and traditional Sri Lankan art forms.
