Indian Navy Chief expected this weekend

COLOMBO, Thursday (Lankapuvath)

Indian Navy Commander Admiral Arun Prakash will arrive here on a four-day visit, a spokesman of the Indian High Commission said.

He is expected on Sunday and will leave on September 16. During his stay, Admiral Prakash will call on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Deputy Minister of Defence Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and the Three Service Commanders.

He will also visit Anuradhapura and pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Save Yuresha's life

Yuresha Sumudumali, a 14 months old girl of No 109/C, Thalangama, Koswatte is suffering from an acute heart ailment and consultant cardiac surgeon Dr. Prasad Krishan of Apollo Hospital has recommended an urgent heart surgery to save her life.

The surgery is estimated to cost Rs, 500,000. Yuresha's father Sugath Pushpakumara says he is unable to foot this bill due to his present financial plight.

He requests philanthropists and the public to provide whatever financial assistance possible to help expedite the surgery. All contributions should be remitted to account Number 207-252-180-0 at the People's Bank Battaramulla branch.

Help for drought hit schools

The Education Ministry program to assist schools affected by the recent drought has received a further boost with Arpico Ltd., agreeing to provide 50 water tanks for distribution among 25 national schools in the North Cental, Uva and Southern Provinces.

An Education Ministry release said these 50 water tanks will be distributed on the basis of two each, among 11 schools in the Hambantota District, 10 schools in the Anuradhapura and Pononnaruwa Districts and four schools in Uva Province.

Australian award presentation

Australian High Commissioner, David Binns presented the Medal of the Order of Australia to Mrs Lorna Wright on September 8 for service to international relations through social welfare activities in Sri lanka, particularly through the Memory of Mother Foundation and the LaSallian Community Education Service.

The Medal was presented on behalf of the Governor General of Australia. Wright is an Australian citizen, states a press release from the Australian High Commission.

EU grants Euro 4 m for Rehabilitation and resettlement

The European Union is granting Euro 4 million to address the rehabilitation and resettlement requirements of displaced persons in the North-East.

This integrated recovery and reintegration programm will cover a community-oriented intergration, area-based approach, to support the sustainable reintegration of refugees, and internally displaced and other vulnerable populations.

A press release sent by the Ministry of Relief and Rehabiitation and Reconciliation states that the project document was signed by the European Commission and the Government of Sri Lanka at a ceremony arranged by the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation on Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 4 p.m. in the Conference Room of this Ministry, at 177, Galle Road, Colombo 3.
