Thousand SAF Madanjeet Singh scholarships for Open University students

SAF Madanjeet Singh Scholarships will be awarded to the first batch of 120 needy young students of the Open University of Sri Lanka on September 14, 2004 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

This is part of the 1,000 scholarships offered annually to Sri Lanka in vocational training and higher education for marginalised students with social and economic disadvantages enrolled at the Open University of Sri Lanka.

The selections have ensured a wide geographic distribution including students from all the districts of North, South, East and West of Sri Lanka, opportunity for thirteen underprivileged districts and gender balance. Each student will receive a grant of Rs. 30,000 per annum for the minimum duration of the programme of study undertaken.

The selected candidates for award on September 14 are enrolled in Certificate in Pre'school Education, Advanced Certificate in Preschool Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Education, a press release said.

It is jointly organized by the South Asia Foundation Sri Lanka Chapter and the Open University of Sri Lanka. The award ceremony will be conducted under the Chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman and Trustee SAF Sri Lanka Chapter Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Professor Uma Coomaraswamy, the Coordinator of the SAF Madanjeet Singh Scholarship programme for the South Asian Region stated that this is a part of 10,000 scholarships for the marginalized students with social and economic disadvantages in South Asia who wish to enroll for vocational and postgraduate programmes at Open and Distance Learning Institutions in South Asian countries.

South Asia Foundation is funded by its Founder, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Madanjeet Singh. It is a voluntary secular, non-profit and non-political youth movement. Its cardinal objective is to promote regional cooperation and peace through education, mutual understanding and creative friendship among the people of South Asia.

The aims, objectives, and activities of SAF are in conformity with the spirit, purpose and principles of the SAARC charter.

It is based in Switzerland and its eight SAF Chapters are registered in the South Asian countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as national entitles guided by eminent Chairperson and their respective Advisory Boards. The Chairman of the SAF Sri Lanka Chapter is Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

South Asia Foundation has chosen open and distance learning institutions of member countries for the offer of scholarships because of their outreach for masses, wide access and flexibility.

The scholarships will give a tremendous boost to the rural marginalised students with social and economic disadvantages who could not hitherto access programmes of the Open University due to their inability to pay for their course fees.
