President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has set up a special committee tasked with the restructure of State owned cluster bus companies. This committee will be chaired by the President. The other members are Transport Minister Felix Perera and Strategic Enterprises Management Agency (SEMA) Chairman Mano Tittawella. The committee will meet every fortnight. Deputy Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanne has been assigned to implement the 'reorganisation plan' for the Kalutara, Gampaha, Wayamba and Sabaragamuwa Bus Companies and also for the Colombo Metropolitan Bus Company. The rest of the companies will report directly to Minister Perera, states a media release issued by the media unit of the office of the President. All cluster bus companies have been requested to develop business plans by October 1 and finalise timetables for all buses by October 31. The companies have been instructed to make roadworthy all buses identified for repair within six months. The SEMA will set up a secretariat to assist the cluster bus companies to develop strategic plans. Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera and Transport Ministry Secretary Dr. D. S. Jayaweera will coordinate all matters pertaining to administration and State funding to implement the restructuring plan. Deputy Minister Alagiyawanne will supervise activities of the National Transport Commission headed by Prof. Amal Kumarage. By December 15, this year the National Transport Commission will implement timetables for buses of cluster bus companies integrated with private bus operations. |
