BCS to play pro-active role to meet challenge of e-SriLanka

By Sudarshana Perera

The British Computer Society (BCS) will play a pro-active role to encourage and enhance software development and designing in SriLanka which is vital to meet the challenge of the e-SriLanka initiative. The National Best Quality Software Award 2004 is a step in the right direction to benchmark the local software talents said ICT Consultant and Treasurer of BCS Sri Lanka Dr. Dileepa de Silva.

Dr. De Silva in an interview with Daily News said that BCS will continue to provide a platform for grassroots talents to emerge so that it would build innovative software required for local application. He said that the National Best Quality Software Award 2004 will be held on October 8 at the Trans Asia Hotel with added features that would correspond to the islandwide participation.

Vice President of VARAX and Secretary of BCS Sri Lanka Bimal Yainne said that Corporate decision-makers should expose their business ventures on ICT based operations and they should extend their support to recognise and encourage the software skills in Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka , the corporate sector has not realised the enormous human skills the local people have and the products developed by them. We always try to depend on other countries and the exodus of local talent is unavoidable, if we do not promote their skills by finding a niche market for their products in Sri Lanka. There are software requirements for the health care sector and other vital sectors in Sri Lanka and efforts should be taken to encourage people to develop software solutions as they have the talents and ability to do so", Yainne said.

The National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) is an annual event to honour significant technological developments and innovations of Software developed in Sri Lanka. The British Computer Society (Sri Lanka section) BCSSL has been organising this event since 1998 and has already held five successful events since its inception.

NBQSA will be broadbased to amalgamate Commercial, Tertiary and Student Awards this year The Sri Lanka Association for software Industry (SLASI, the franchise holder of APICTA in Sri Lanka, Software Exporter Association of Sri Lanka (SEA), The computer Society of Sri Lanka, Association of Computer Training Organisations (ACTOS), University conducing ICT Degree Program, FITIS member associations, Export Development Board (EDB) and Board of Investment (BOI) are supporters of this annual event.

The objectives of the NBQSA are to provide recognition to outstanding achievements of individual and organisations of Sri Lanka who have developed high quality software products. The event will also provide a window to gain international recognition of Local SW/ICT products and help improve Quality of local products and services to meet international standards.
