People's Bank to offer 130 schols for students

The People's Bank will offer 130 scholarships for school students who excel in aesthetic and extracurricular activities islandwide.

The program called Sisu Udana Vishistayo will encourage and develop the latent talents of youth in the country. The first Sisu Udana Vishistayo" awards ceremony will take place on December 29 at the BMICH.

General Manager of the People's Bank Asoka de Silva said that the awards scheme will recognise and reward 10 outstanding youth (under 20) selected from within 24 districts in the country. "Six categories such as sports, drama, dance and singing, art, environment and conservation, computer software and oratory will be the main areas of recognition for this awards scheme.

While the initial selection will be made on a district level winners will be identified and rewarded on the day of the awards ceremony. In addition the People's Bank will reward ten underprivileged schools that have produced outstanding youngsters. Each school will get a new library, science laboratory and sports equipment.

If either the winner has a Sisu Udana Account or the school has a Sisu Udana Banking Unit, the prize money will be doubled," he said.

Head of Marketing of the Bank Bertal Pinto Jayawardena said that the bank has already over one million Sisu Udana accounts.

The competition reinforces the People's Bank position as the number one bank in the country to recognise and reward children in a long term nation building exercise. The bank encourages the children in the country to aspire to greater heights of success and thereby, endeavours to facilitate the development of future leaders of the nation.

The People's Bank has played an active role in several national level projects that were beneficial to the country. In 1994, the Bank launched a special scholarships program. Sisu Dana Kusalatha Pranama to reward the best O/L students. To date, this program supports and rewards youngsters who produce excellent O/L results," he said.

He said the closing date for the program will be September 15 and applications can be obtained from all People's Bank branches in the country.
