Travel mart to focus on developing new markets by Irangika Range "Sri Lanka Gateway to South Asia -Travel Mart 2004", a major travel and tourism trade fair organised by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion and the Sri Lanka Tourist Board will be held at the BMICH from October 2 to 5. An official of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau said this travel and tourism industry-focussed exhibition would be held for the second time in Sri Lanka. "The objective of the mart is to create a platform for the travel tourism industry of Sri Lanka to conduct business with potential international tourism buyers in addition to showcasing the infrastructure facilities available for tourists in Sri Lanka," she said. She said this year's travel mart would focus on developing new markets. "At present Sri Lanka is facing a tremendous growth in tourism and relatively new markets such as India and China are on the upward trend. The exhibition would provide an opportunity to exhibit local travel and tourism products and services to local and foreign countries' visitors especially in the South Asian Region. This also is a good opening for large, medium and especially small-time local companies to find partners to reach new tourism markets such as China and India. One of the main highlights of the mart is the workshop, where SAARC countries will take part in the mart and conduct presentations on tourism opportunities in their respective countries," she said. "The first Mart called "Destination Sri Lanka Gateway to South Asia was held last year and consisted of over 100 booths including foreign participation in the SAARC region namely India, Maldives, Pakistan and Nepal. The international tour operator communities from Europe, Far East, Middle East and South Asia have shown greater interest in attending the Mart and most of these buyers brought more business to Sri Lanka," she said. "The mart will comprise exhibitors from countries such as India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan and the Maldives in addition to the travel and tourism industry of Sri Lanka. Exhibitors will display direct and related travel and tourism products and services. Around 300 buyers from around the world are expected this year and the mart will develop absolute enthusiasm among the travel and tourism industry in Sri Lanka and in the South Asian region.," she said. |
