Aussie women in easy win

by Chris Dhambarage

The visiting Australian women's cricket team beat the Sri Lanka women's cricket team by nine wickets in the first one day international at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Lankans after being put into bat were shot out for just 102 runs from 30 overs and the Australians reached 105 for 1 in 28.2 overs. Woman of the match Julie Hunter returned excellent figures of five wickets for 30 runs from her nine overs.

Eshani Kaushalya made a top score of 18 not out for the home side with the help of three boundaries. But the rest of the batting collapsed against the pace of Julie Hunter with extras being the top scorer with a total of 24 wides and one no ball.

The Australians wasted no time in reaching their target with opener Julie Worner stroking an unbeaten half century. She remained unbeaten on 58 having struck nine boundaries and faced 79 deliveries. She put on 59 runs in an entertaining opening stand with skipper Leah Poulton and a further 46 runs for the unfinished second wicket with vice captain Kate Blackwell.

The second match of the series will be played on September 4 at the same venue. The series was inaugurated today in the presence of David Binns, High Commissioner for Australia and Mohan de Silva President Sri Lanka Cricket at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
