Army-LTTE meeting postponed

by Ranil Wijayapala

The meeting fixed for Friday between the Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE by the Nordic Truce Monitors to discuss the Batticaloa situation was postponed for next Tuesday with the agreement of both parties, SLMM Spokesman Oskar Solnes said yesterday.

He said the parties agreed for the date as it was convenient for them to prepare for the meeting.

Meanwhile, SLMM Chief Major General (Rtd) Trond Furuhovde who fixed the meeting between the Army and the LTTE on Tuesday following the separate discussion he had with both parties will fly to Oslo this evening to brief the Norwegian government on the present situation of the Ceasefire.

SLMM Spokesman Solnes described SLMM Chief's visit to Oslo as a routine one to brief the Norwegian Government. Furuhovde is scheduled to meet Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgessen during his stay in Norway.

Furuhovde's visit to Oslo comes at a time when the SLMM's role has come under criticism over the killings in the East and suburbs of Colombo allegedly by the LTTE and also as truce monitors are in the process of inquiring into Government complains about the LTTE military build-up in Trincomalee.

Asked about the progress of the SLMM's inquiries about the LTTE camps in Trincomalee, Solnes said the truce monitors were in the process of completing their task.
