CTB fares up

The CTB has decided to increase its bus fares along with the private bus fare hike which came into effect from yesterday.

Acting Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanne told the Daily News that the fare hike of the state-run bus service was effected from yesterday simultaneously with the private bus fare hike. "In terms of the revision approved by the Transport Ministry recently, CTB bus fares will be brought on par with private bus fares which were increased by eight per cent," CTB Deputy Chairman Nihal Perera said.

The annual allocation of Treasury funds for the service and payment of employees' salaries is around Rs four billion. The basic Rs.3.00 fare was increased by 50 cents. The Rs 4.50, Rs 7.50 and Rs 9.50 fares will be increased by 50 cents while there will be no increase in the Rs 6 and Rs 9 fares. The overall fare revision is nine per cent.
