United political effort needed to solve ethnic problem - Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera

by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of the Malwatte Maha Vihara Chapter said that all political parties and individuals should make a united effort for finding a lasting solution to the ethnic problem, without trying to find out who was going to get the honour or the credit.

Unless they were united in this attempt in the interest of the country, it will not be possible to save the country from destruction.

The Mahanayaka Thera made these observations when UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardhane paid a courtesy call on the former at the Malwatte Maha Vihara, Kandy yesterday.

"The President and the Prime Minister were representing the people of the whole country and the LTTE should accept that position and act accordingly. There had been a series of killings during the recent past after the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement. Any right thinking person would not approve those killings.

All the political parties in the country in the South in particular, should come to a concensus on finding a lasting solution to the ethnic problem before talking with the LTTE. When taking steps to find a solution to the problem they should not take into account who was going to get the honour or credit for it. All politicians should unite to find a solution and unless they did so, the country cannot be saved from destruction, added Most Ven. Sumangala Mahanayake Thera.

When the Mahanayaka Thera said on an earlier occasion that he was willing to meet a delegation from the LTTE if that organisation sought for an opportunity, there had been various criticisms levelled at him from some sections. But he wished to tell those critics that he made that offer since making some effort to find a solution was considered to be better than idling without doing anything, he said.
