by Nadira Gunatilleke The International Association for Homeless Families (IAHF), Sri Lanka Organisation will open its head office today at 9.00 a.m. at No. 50/4, Thaladuwa Road, Negombo. A Compact Disc (CD) named 'Muthu Wessak' (A rain of pearls) will also be launched at the same occasion. This is a well-known social service organisation registered in France and Sri Lanka. The main objective of this organisation is to assist victims of natural disasters and civil wars. The Head Office will be opened with the participation of Ministers, Ananda Bassnayake, the President of IAHF, a Sri Lankan residing in France. The organisation has made arrangements to implement several projects in order to assist people affected by natural disasters and civil wars. Under these projects a housing scheme consisting 44 houses with all facilities at a cost of Rs. 20 million will be constructed in a area of two and half acres to provide temporary accommodation to the people affected by natural disasters and civil wars. These housing schemes can be used instead of schools, religious institutions and other public and State institutions that provide shelter for such victims. The first phase of this project will be commenced in Anuradhapura. The schools will also be built close to the housing schemes in order to prevent any interruption cause to the education of the school children belong to displaced families. Books and other educational equipment will also be provided. The housing schemes that provide temporary shelter for the victims will help to secure the employments of the displaced persons, continue the education of the school children belong to those families and protect the children from sexual abuse and solve several social problems, arise due to displacement. The housing schemes, designed to use for dual purposes as houses and the community service centres, will be built close to the areas that face natural disaster frequently. The IAHF will also make arrangements to provide permanent houses for the natural disaster and civil war victims with the assistance and support of the International community. Addressing a press briefing at the Hotel Nippon, Colombo on Wednesday, Ananda Bassnayake said that the main intention of the proposed project is creating a moral society and good citizens. |
